Congressman Huffman hosts virtual forum on Klamath River dams

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Congressman Jared Huffman was in Humboldt County Tuesday and held a virtual forum examining the impact of the Klamath dams on tribes, fisheries, the environment, and downstream stakeholders.

Specifically, Huffman addressed 4 aging dams on the Klamath River owned by Pacificorp and Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, which Huffman says have made millions for shareholders, but have caused hardships for native communities and cultures and those who depend on the river’s fish. The overall message is that after planning for dam removal over the last 10 years, action must be taken now.

Senator Mike McGuirre, Assembly member Jim Wood, and tribal members from the Yurok and Karuk Tribes also participated in the panel to express their opposition to delaying the removal of the dams any longer.

The full virtual forum can be viewed on congressman Huffman’s YouTube and Facebook pages.
