HSU student athletes return to new environment

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM) – As they wait to resume competition, student athletes have returned to an entirely new environment at Humboldt State University.

Along with the rest of the university, athletes have undergone multiple COVID-19 tests. According to Athletics Director Jane Teixeira, the testing does not stop there. Coaches, support staff, and Teixeira herself have all been tested.

After extensive planning and coordinating with health officials, HSU Athletics implemented self, temperature, and symptom checks for all members of the program. In the event of a positive case, HSU athletics developed necessary plans as a response. Masks are required on campus and regular testing will start when teams begin face-to-face activities.

Teixeira said while there has been a low number of positive cases on campus, any case of COVID-19 affects the program, even if it is outside of athletics.

“We want to be good partners in this endeavor as we try to beat this virus and keep the positivity rate down. So we will continue to follow proper procedures for that so if there is a positive case it affects all of us, not just one particular entity because we are partners in this together,” Teixeira said.
