SAMOA, Calif. (KIEM)-As if wildfires weren’t enough, the Arcata Fire District and Cal fire responded this morning to a fire at an encampment near the Manila area of the Samoa Peninsula – according to Fire Chief Justin McDonald.  It’s happening too many times. McDonald says, starting an outdoor fire is too dangerous right now.

He says, first responders have compassion for those that need to keep warm and cook.

However, the vegetation in this area is so dry – especially in the Samoa Dunes – just a small spark can set-off a raging fire in just a matter of minutes.

He adds, if you see a column of smoke – call 911 immediately.
