EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-Hundreds of people gathered outside the Supreme Court Saturday to pay their respects to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Locally – nearly 100 community members also paid tribute to Ginsburg in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse.

Ginsburg died Friday from complications of pancreatic cancer at age 87.

She was the oldest Justice and the second woman to sit on the Supreme Court.

She was a champion of women’s rights and served on the court for more than 27 years.

Jocelyn Murphy and Cyndal Ethridge came out to the Humboldt Courthouse to honor Ginsburg.

“So we’re here today honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg because she’s an important figure in our lives and we came out here for every protest this summer for Black Lives Matter,” said Murphy. “So we’re all about equally rights and she definitely represented that.”

Pamela Robertson says, she felt compelled to come out and show respects to Ginsburg – who was a trailblazer for women in America for more than a quarter of a century.

“I’m 61-years-old, and it’s just been recently that I learned to appreciate what women before me have done for women’s rights,” said Robertson. “Woman were not given the same opportunities in the workplace.

“Some areas you couldn’t be on a jury. So, I think because of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we have a lot to be thankful for.”

The Supreme Court’s statement noted that a private interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.

As of Saturday, no details about a public funeral or a televised memorial service have been announced.
