SJSU coach has special connection to HSU

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM) – For some San Jose State University football players, coaches, and staff members, this might be their first time setting foot on the Humboldt State University campus. For Tight Ends Coach Matt Adkins, it is quite the opposite.

“My brother played here, my dad coached here, and my grandfather was the head coach at Central Washington University, so he would come here as an opposing coach,” Adkins said.

Adkins said it is a special opportunity after spending so much time on campus in the past. His father, Doug Adkins, coached at HSU from 2000 to 2007. During that time, Matt said he was always around the program – even riding on the team bus.

“It’s just kind of wild that it is kind of my turn to come back even if there isn’t football here. I guess the football gods wanted me to do a little bit of coaching in the Redwood Bowl before it was all said and done,” Adkins said.

When Adkins first heard the news about SJSU holding training camp at HSU, he could not believe it.

“Well when I first heard, I thought I was getting punked. Obviously, it’s a wild situation for us to go all the way up here,” Adkins said.

Based on his extensive experience with the area, Adkins told his players about the benefits of the relocation.

“The thing that is awesome about Humboldt that I know extremely well, that I was feeding our guys nonstop, is this is the best football weather you can get,” Adkins said, “It is never too hot, it is never too cold.”
