FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)-Fortuna police are investigating a hit and run that caused a motorcyclist to be taken to the hospital.

According to Police Chief Casey Day, the incident happened at about 1 p.m. Saturday on the 1700-block of Fortuna Boulevard near Redwood Way in Fortuna-  and says they now have a person of interest.

“What we do know is that a male subject who was driving a Blue Chevy minivan pulled out into the road on Redwood Way and that a motorcyclist, which was traveling eastbound on Redwood Way had to take evasive action and lay the motorcycle down,” he said.

Day says, the driver of that van drove off without stopping – the victim of the accident is expected to be OK.

The identity the motorcyclist is not being released as that person is a victim in a crime, the suspect’s name is being withheld as this is an ongoing investigation.

A hit and run, according to Day, is a serious offense and has varying consequences.

“Depending whether it’s property damage or injury to person, and so obviously the injury to person. it does escalate the charge of hit and run, to a felony,” he said.

Anyone with information or witnessed the hit and run incident is urged to call Fortuna police at (707) 725-7550.
