Frankovich talks politicization of COVID-19

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – Throughout this election season, COVID-19 has been a recurring topic.

According to Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich, the politicization of the virus has caused confusion for many, as some believe the pandemic is simultaneously inflated and minimized by opposing parties.

“It is challenging to try and provide guidance and navigate this when it is not simply science driving the process,” Frankovich said.

She added that it is difficult for citizens to make a decision on mask wearing when science is not accepted at face value.

“Facial coverings became very political and really it should be a simple public health measure,” Frankovich said, “Early on in the pandemic, we did not understand the importance of facial coverings and helping to control spread. As we do in science, we watch what is happening and we study it, and then we amend what we do based on what we find. And what we found was, it is extremely important. We have adjusted the guidance and without a political climate, I think it would be easier for people to hear that and move forward.”
