First 5’s Emergency Supplies program expands in Humboldt County

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- First 5 Humboldt, the City of Eureka and Supplybank.org came together earlier today to talk about the growth of the First 5 California Emergency Supplies program in Humboldt County.

First 5 started off with a budget of $4-million to fund emergency supplies for the counties that work with First 5 and has grown the budget to $5-million.

The program supplies child care providers with personal protective equipment and other items to help low-income families.

“One day changing tides came, we were still closed and Nancy, our director, was doing a Facebook live story time and she was finishing some things up in the office,” said Shannon Fazio, the Recreation Supervisor for the Eureka Community Services. “There was a knock at the door and changing tides was there with a bag full of supplies for us and we put them all to good use when we re-opened on June 1st.”

The event featured a new tool to help prevent community spread of COVID-19.

Little Saplings Preschool is the first recipient of the First 5 California’s infrared thermometers that are being given statewide.
