EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- Halloween may be a little different this year, but the City of Eureka wanted to give families a chance to get out and enjoy the holiday.

They held a pumpkin hunt at Sequoia Park, Cooper Gulch and Twenty-thirty park.

“What we have is 25 pumpkins hidden throughout the park,” said Mark Brooks, the Community Service Coordinator for the City of Eureka. “The participants are going to walk through the park, track the names of each pumpkin and once they get to the end, we’ll count the names of the pumpkins and each kid will get a candy and a prize bag.”

Usually the event is much larger, but they had to scale it down to make sure people could stay safe and still have a good time.

“We were able to adapt by making sure that we are outdoors, we have a trail and a clear path for everyone to walk,” said Brooks. “Then we just asked everyone to maintain social distancing and wear your facial coverings.”

Many families were grateful and excited that the city was able to host this event amid the pandemic.

“This has been great, nice and just super low key with community vibes,” said Richard Karevoll, a local resident. “People walking around and little kids getting to check out pumpkins, it’s been very, very nice to see that sort of thing happen and it’s doing it in a nice, safe way too so it’s all good.”

Even though this Halloween looked a little bit different, parents know that their kids will still remember this Halloween as a great one.
