FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)-A burn ban in place for both Humboldt and Del Norte counties since June 29th was lifted this week – however, there are rules you have to follow.

Tran Beyea is a Fire Capt. Specialist, with Cal Fire, he says when it comes to fire, there is always a danger.

“There are regulations, permitting processes through the North Coast Unified Quality Management District,” he said.  “Even as there’s more rain in the forecast and fuel moisture are coming up, the chance of a fire getting out of control is lessening, the hazard still remains, there’s still danger involved. So follow those terms on the permits.”

Cal Fire formally canceled the burn suspension yesterday, allowing valid agriculture and residents to resume burning on permitted days.

Inspections may be required for some burns, which can be verified by contacting a Local Air Quality Management District at (707) 443-3093 or Cal Fire at (707) 725-4413

According to Cal Fire, only dry, natural vegetative materials may be burned.

Burning trash, painted wood or other types of debris is not allowed.

No burning on windy days, and piles must stay within four feet in diameter and height.

Clear 10-feet down to the bare soil around the pile you plan to burn.

Always have a shovel and water source nearby and an adult is required to supervise the fire at all times.
