EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- In this day and age of Netflix and Hulu, the brick and mortar video stores have almost gone extinct, almost.

Spotlight video has been around for about 20 years facing digital competition from companies like Netflix and Hulu.

“It’s a lot about the community and we’ve built a lot of friendships along the years,” said Jacob Taylor, Manager at Spotlight Video. “We still have the same people coming back year after year that we really appreciate.”

Besides having to change with technology, they have also had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the COVID and the fact that when there’s no movies coming through the theaters that means there are no new movies in the video store either,” said Tony Hannan, the Owner of Spotlight Video.

They have managed to beat the odds and stay open, but not because of the movies as many of us would think.

“We also have the tanning salon. That helps out a lot,” said Taylor. “There’s two businesses in one. So, definitely helps.”

The salon was added to the video story 10 years ago and has giving this video story an advantage.

“It works well because our extended hours make it pretty convenient for people,” said Hannan. “So, we had talked to other people that have done it and thought it would be a nice compliment.”

The tanning salon along with the movie rentals have helped keep this video store open and customers are happy that it is still up and running.

“I love the people, the people in here are great, they’re knowledgeable, they’re helpful and they’re here,” said Catherine Barnes, a long-time customer at Spotlight Video. “We used to have a number of video stores, in the number of years and this is the only one here in town.”
