FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)-Fortuna High School Principal Clinton Duey sent out a recorded message alerting parents one of their student’s tested positive for COVID-19.

“This call is to inform you that a student at Fortuna High tested positive for COVID-19,” the pre-recorded message said.

“If your child was exposed, you would have already been contacted by myself or Mr. Rossman, dean of students. Some class periods, staff and students have been quarantined and put on distance learning. If you have additional questions or concern please call the school or public health.”

School administrators informed parents Thursday of the positive test – which was shared with school administrators by the Humboldt County Department of Health And Human Services.

Some Fortuna High School students and staff members were told to quarantine – some classes switched to distance learning after school administrators learned of the positive test result.

There has been a bit of controversy in Humboldt County surrounding in-person instruction, some parents, teachers and staff object to Fortuna’s and Ferndale’s choice to hold in- person classes.

Those with questions or concerns can call either call Fortuna High School at (707) 725-4461 or Humboldt County Public Health at (707) 445-2600.
