Public Health guidance for tents for outdoor dining

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — With Humboldt County now in the purple tier, Restaurants are required to shift to outdoor dining. With the colder weather in the winter months, some restaurants may choose to put up tents for diners.

The Humboldt County Public Health Department has some guidance as far as how enclosed those tents can be.

According to Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich, in order to be safe, tents need to be open on 3 sides. The goal is to protect customers from the elements outdoors, but also provide enough air flow to reduce the risk of covid-19 transmission.

“It’s really meant to provide an overhead protection against sun and rain and such, but is really not meant to just simply be indoor dining in a tent, so it really does need to be an open facility. Obviously, the idea of that is to make sure that there is a lot of ventilation occurring,” Frankovich says.
