DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-A local community group that encourages safer prescription, proper storage, and disposal of opioids, as well as reductions in both, over dose deaths and addiction stigma, is offering free Naloxone training and it starts tomorrow at 2 p.m.

“Rx Safe Del Norte is a grant funded coalition that meets once a month to work on issues surrounding opioid use in Del Norte County,” said Trainer Mahlija Florendo. “We partner with United Indian Health Service (OAC) Opioid Awareness Coalition, the Yurok Tribe Health and Human Services.”

Naloxone more commonly known, as Narcan, is a lifesaving drug, and when administered, it can safely and quickly reverse an opioid overdose or poisoning.

All participants will be trained on Narcan use and those who complete the quiz at the end of the training will receive a certificate and doorstep delivery of Naloxone kits.

The California Department of Public Health  issued a statewide standing order for Naloxone on June 7th of 2019, which works as a standing prescription.

Now, it is no longer required to get a prescription from an individual doctor.

According to Rx Safe Del Norte, Narcan should be included in all first aid kits.

“We do want to remind everyone, that although anyone can take the training, if you are representing law enforcement, fire or EMS, the training will not cover you at work and there are state regulations that cover those groups and they must go through local EMS agency. Everyone is still welcome to join the training,” said Florendo.

A pre-recorded training on Rx Safe Del Norte’s Youtube channel will be available for those unable to attend tomorrow’s virtual training.
