Covid-19 vaccine one step closer to being available in Humboldt County

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — An advisory panel endorsed the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine and recommended the FDA approve it for emergency use yesterday. This brings us one step closer to vaccine distribution not only nationally, but also here locally.

We know that Humboldt County is set to receive about 975 initial doses, and they’re going to local health care workers first. Putting that into context, there are just over 10,000 health care workers in different settings across the county. According to Deputy Health Officer Dr. Josh Ennis, health care workers have the option to opt out of receiving a vaccine.

“At this time there is no requirement, there is no mandate. I think that’s all I have to say about that,” Ennis says.

If the Pfizer vaccine receives approval by the FDA, those first doses could be shipped out as early as next week. An advisory panel is set to meet about the Moderna vaccine on December 17th.
