ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)- It’s been hard for many artist in Humboldt to showcase their artwork but Arcata Main Street has found a way to help.

Arcata Main Street has been having a Sunday art market for the past six Sundays as a part of this year’s season of wonder and light.

Many artists have been hit hard this year by the covid-19 pandemic and have not had the same venues to showcase and sell their artwork.

So, Arcata Main Street decided to help the local artist by holding open air art markets on Sunday’s.

“There are fewer opportunities for vendors of arts and crafts to be able to connect with their customers in the community,” said Soshanna Anthony, the Event Coordinator for Aracta Main Street. “There are a few things like the Bayside Community Hall that are just some areas but not nearly as many places for them to share their work.”

Many of the vendors, like Xochi Quetzalli, are grateful for the opportunity to show and sell their art work.

“For us who live all locally, we are just thinking that nothing is going to happen this year,” said Xochi Quetzali, a vendor at the Sunday art market. “Then when we started finding about the farmers markets, Arcata Main Street putting on this market today, it opened up our hearts and we can do this.”

The vendors were also happy they got a chance to interact with their customers face-to-face, even if it has to be at a distance.

“I’m just glad this is here and I choose to not sell online because I really like meeting the people and having that human interaction of who’s getting my stuff and I enjoy that,” said Roland Lebrun, a vendor at the Sunday art market.

The organization was happy they could lend a hand to the local artist and hope that this event can become a new tradition.
