HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – A surge of wild mushrooms have been seen along the North Coast this week, Reporter Cristy Kuhr talked with local mushroom farmer Levon Durr, owner of Fungaia Farm about how to enjoy the fungus.

“Some of the cooler weather varieties of wild mushrooms were able to still make great appearances and our have been going off this last week,” said Durr.

A way to get out of the house, get some exercise, and enjoy nature.

“Yeah so you can look into mushroom harvesting, wild mushroom harvesting, I think it’s really fun. There’s some great books out there now. We have a local book that focuses on Humboldt in the Redwood Coast, it’s called Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast.”

Consuming what you find can be part of the fun.

“Contrary to a lot of peoples understanding of mushrooms not being very nutritious for you they’re actually full of vitamins and minerals and protein and they have amazing compounds that are really good for your immune system and overall general health. That being said there are poisonous mushrooms and there are deadly mushrooms out there and it’s really important that you know what you’re looking at and what you’re picking before you eat it.”

Please remember if you are picking mushrooms, be responsible and leaving some for the animals, bugs and the birds.
