HOOPA VALLEY, Calif. (KIEM)-the Hoopa Office of Emergency Services Wednesday reported one new COVID-19 case on the Hoopa Valley Reservation – bringing their total confirmed cases to 117, with 42 active cases, 75 recoveries and zero deaths.

The Hoopa Valley Tribe saw active COVID-19 cases jump from two to 42 in just a couple of weeks.

Deputy Incident Commander Wendy “Poppy” Ferris-George works with the Hoopa OES Management Team and had a strong message for the Hoopa community.

“We ask that the community wear masks while in public at all times and maintain 6-feet distance from others,” she said.

As the Hoopa Tribe is faced with a second surge in CORONAVIRUS cases – vaccinating the most vulnerable on the reservation is underway.

“The vaccine is here, if there are resources needed give us a call we have three staff members on right now,” said Ferris-George.

Operations Chief Allie Hostler with the Hoopa OES Management Team says, inoculation is not mandatory but highly recommended.

“Enrolled tribal members age 75 and over are prioritized in this first run of vaccinations,” she said.  “Vaccines for tribal elders 65 and older, and persons 18 to 64 with high risk medical conditions will are expected to begin late next week.”

Resources and information are available through the Hoopa OES hotline at (707) 630-7371, so far, 57- homes on the reservation are in quarantine, according to Hostler.

“Not all of those are COVID positive families, but they may be awaiting test results or may have had contact with a COVID positive person,” she said.

Of those households – about 15 – have family members confirmed with the virus.

“Two of those active cases are isolated out of Humboldt County,” said Hostler. “They were tested at K’ima:w, therefore they are included our number count, but they are not actually here in our community.”

K’ima:w Medical Center continue to release their own daily updated COVID statistics.

“Please note our numbers may not exactly match Humboldt County’s numbers but we trust they are the most accurate and reflect actual tests taken at K’ima:w Medical Center or residents of the Hoopa Valley,” she said.

Those who’d like to get tested can call (530) 625-4261, Ext. 0325.
