Fortuna Police respond to man with a gun, high school and middle school placed on lockdown

FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM) — Fortuna Police responded the 500 block of 12th Street for a report of a man with a handgun Monday.

When they arrived on the scene just before noon, the man had fired a shot into the air and then held the gun to his head. Fortuna Union High School and Fortuna Middle School went into lockdown mode as a precautionary measure.

When officers found the man, he was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Once the scene was secured, the lockdown orders at the schools were lifted.
