Demolition underway at Jacobs Junior High School campus in Eureka

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — If you’ve been in the area of Allard Avenue in Eureka, you may have noticed a lot of activity at the Jacobs Junior High School campus as crews work on demolishing the building.

The facility was closed back in 2009, and the city has worked since then to clean up the property, demolish it, and ultimately sell it. The site contained hazardous materials like lead paint and asbestos in the ceilings and roofing. The Eureka City Schools District says the project is scheduled to be completed by mid-February of this year.

“The end is in site as far as those buildings being there. It’s sad to see these buildings demolished because they’re a great part of the history of Eureka, but at the same time it’s a great symbol as far as us as a community moving forward because those buildings were certainly beyond repair and we’re ready to close that chapter and really focus on our next chapter,” Eureka City Schools Superintendent Fred Van Vleck says.

Both the City of Eureka and the California Highway Patrol have shown interest in the property, but the district has not made a final decision on whether or not to sell the site.
