Eureka Struggles to Control the Use of Fireworks

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – There has been an increase in the number of reported firework related complaints in this past year and the city is having trouble enforcing its use.

This is due to the fact that many different fireworks can travel over 100 yards, the user can quickly get away, and there are long reaction times before a complaint call is made.

Although the Eureka city code says fireworks are illegal in old town and Woodley Island, the California health and safety code says that “safe and sane” fireworks are still allowed.

Currently, an online reporting tool is being created to allow for less calls related to firework complaints so that the city can focus more on reporting to emergency calls.
