Latest winter storm causes road closures, increase in weather related calls to emergency personnel

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — It’s been busy out on the roadways as drivers face the winter storm hitting the North Coast. Caltrans crews have been responding to road closures, clearing down trees, and working throughout the night.

Route 96 was closed just north of Willow Creek due to downed trees, but was reopened Wednesday morning. Route 254 in Humboldt is fully closed from Phillipsville to 2 miles north of Weott due to downed trees and power lines.

Highway 101 in Mendocino County from Cummings to Reynolds Highway north of Willits was closed. Highway 101 has fully reopened as of 4:15 pm Wednesday. Mattole Road at Bull Creek has reopened. Titlow Hill Road is clear up to the towers, but chains are required.

Humboldt Bay Fire has received over 33 weather related or hazardous conditions calls Wednesday. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office rescued 3 motorists that were stranded along Mattole Road late Wednesday night, in addition to getting 40 weather related calls in the last 24 hours.
