Two men survive forced landing, walk away with minor injuries

DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-Two Oregon men are expected to be OK after the plane they were in, was forced to land in an open field in Del Norte County, after experiencing mechanical failure, according to the sheriff’s office. 

The Cessna 182 left from Medford to Crescent City at about 10:30 Sunday morning.

The Del Norte County Dispatch Center received the call at 11:47 a.m., according to Sheriff Erik Apperson.

Pilot Field Morey, and his copilot Seth Hofstetter, who experienced minor injuries, landed in a marsh at the end of Buzzini Road in the Fort Dick community of Del Norte County.

“They started to reach out to 911 and that’s when they got a hold of our dispatcher Rebecca Valentin,” said Apperson. “It was sort of heartwarming that everyone ended up OK, and They got to thank that dispatcher for her outstanding job, dispatchers don’t get that very often.”

Apperson says the crash was not as bad as depicted in the image captured by sheriff’s deputies dispatched to the scene.

The cause of the mechanical failure is unknown, the incident is under investigation.
