California Department of Public Health rescinds hospital surge order

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — The California Department of Public Health rescinded the hospital surge order on Friday citing improving conditions at hospitals across the state. It comes the same day Humboldt County reported 11 new hospitalizations.

The surge order required hospitals to delay some elective surgeries and also to accept patients from out of the area if ICU capacity in those counties falls below 15%. One local hospital was fortunate enough to not have to cancel any surgeries while the order was in place all thanks to increased ICU capacity.

“We’ve been closely monitoring our surgery schedule since the recent surge order by the state and have been fortunate to not have to cancel any surgeries due to a surge in COVID. This was accomplished by creating additional care capacity in our ICU at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, going from 12 beds to 18, and by adding a six-bed intermediate care unit to handle more complex patients,” according to a statement from St. Joseph Hospital.
