Black History Month book drive extended through March 15, Goal is 500 BIPOC themed books collected and donated

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-The NAACP of Eureka has extended their black history month book drive through march 15th.

The drive, founded by Humboldt State University alumni and journalist Tina Sampay, supports Humboldt County kindergarten through 12th grade students, Black and American history, as well as Black arts and culture, and was created to promote diversity, equity, and empathy in school.

The goal is to purchase and donate 500 books authored or themed around BIPOC people by March 15th, from one of the local participating bookstores.

The books will then be distributed among all Fortuna school libraries.

NAACP of Eureka President Sharrone Blanck says the books will benefit all area students.

“You’re supporting the students, the black students in the area, the local bookstores in the area, and you are really supporting all students. Everyone can read these books. We are trying to expand everyone’s opportunity to learn in schools not just black or African American Children and representation is important.”
