FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM) — Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna is closing its obstetrics program and transitioning childbirth services to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka on July 1st.

“These are always difficult decisions, but I think this is what is going to be best for moms and babies in the long run,” according to Chief Executive for Providence in Humboldt County Dr. Roberta Luskin-Hawk.

The decline in deliveries across Humboldt County, and specifically the eel river valley, is forcing Redwood Memorial’s obstetrics unit to close its doors. Another factor in the decision is the drop in the number of OBGYN providers since 2009.

“We’re having a very difficult time trying to recruit people to this market, so we had to think about how we would do it differently,” Luskin-Hawk says.

Babies will still be delivered at Redwood Memorial through the end of June. Past that point, mothers will have to travel to St. Joseph or Mad River hospital in Arcata to give birth. Nurses from redwood memorial will be offered positions within the new program.

“What we want to do is really take some of the best aspects of that program and incorporate it into a program that’s not any longer the old St. Joseph program or the old Redwood program, but a newer, collaborative program,” Luskin-Hawk adds.

This decision was first talked about back in 2013. There was a last ditch effort to keep it open, but it hasn’t been enough. Luskin-Hawk acknowledges there may be a sense of loss felt in the community, but says the childbirth hub in Eureka will be able to provide a wide range of services, some not available in Fortuna.

“Good thing about St. Joe’s is we also have a level 2 neonatal intensive care unit for a baby that’s in distress. We have more anesthesiologists so we can provide some different services than Redwood has. I think after a period of adjustment, we will have a strong program that’s sustainable and that’s what’s important,” Luskin-Hawk says.

A plan is already in place to renovate and remodel the existing obstetrics unit at St. Joseph Hospital. Construction is expected to finish up this summer.
