HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — A third Covid-19 vaccine has been approved. This one from Johnson & Johnson. It’s a single dose shot compared to the 2 doses required by both Pfizer and Moderna.

California is set to receive 380,000 doses of the J&J vaccine this week, but according to County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman, Humboldt County has not yet received any allocation numbers.

“We’re hopeful we can get some of that. Certainly if we do get that it will increase our availability for appointments and the speed at which we can get people vaccinated,” Hoffman says.

Once the vaccine arrives in Humboldt County, it will be distributed broadly to many different groups. According to Hoffman, at that point, people will be able to decide what vaccine they want.

“We’ve always encouraged people to take any vaccine that is offered to you. I think that it’s really important to recognize that the faster we get vaccinated, the faster we’re going to get out of this,” Hoffman adds.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is about 72% effective based on U.S. clinical trials. Both Pfizer and Moderna boast roughly 94% efficacy. All three vaccines decrease death, hospitalizations, and severe disease at high rates.

“They’re all very good vaccines from an individual and also a public health standpoint. I think all 3 of them meet a high bar and exceed actually what we could have expected from any vaccine in such a short amount of time,” Hoffman says.
