Humboldt County Public Health Officials warn of possible move back to the purple tier

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Humboldt County Public Health officials are warning residents that we could potentially move back into the purple tier for Covid-19 restrictions as soon as next week.

Case rates have increased over the past week, instead of continuing to decrease like they had in weeks prior. Officials are urging the public once again to remain vigilant when it comes to safety precautions.

Looking at the numbers, the County has an adjusted case rate of 8.2 per 100,000 people. This falls into the purple tier. The positivity rate is 3%, which is lower than the 8% or more required for the purple tier. According to County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman, a move to a less restrictive tier is unlikely.

“Again, the case count is going up, so that’s going in the wrong direction for us to make the move and could potentially put us back in the purple tier if that move continues dramatically up into purple tier case count metrics,” Hoffman says.

Tier status is updated by the California Department of Public Health on a weekly basis.
