Mayor Pro Temp resigns after he pleads guilty to election fraud

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (KIEM)-The Crescent City’s New Mayor Pro Tem Alex Campbell pleaded guilty Tuesday to election fraud in Del Norte County’s Superior Court according to the clerk’s office.

Campbell faced two felony counts of perjury and one count of false declaration of candidacy.

At this point no charges have been dismissed, however, normally charges not included in a plea are dismissed at time of sentencing.

Crescent City Manager Office was alerted, back in January that Campbell did not live in Crescent City, which violates election laws.

All city council members must have a residence inside city limits.

Campbell allegedly owns a home in the county but rents a room within the city limits.

City Manager Eric Weir says Campbell formally resigned from office Tuesday afternoon.

“So in filing the vacancy the council has two basic options for them, one is to hold a special election, which can be pretty expensive, or the other, is to appoint someone into the position.

“Which that position would then appointed up until the next general municipal election municipal which would be November of 2022.”

Campbell was elected to the crescent city council on November 3^rd 20-20, then ultimately became mayor pro tem in December.

He expected back in court for sentencing April 15th.
