UFCW Local 5 proposes higher pay for grocery workers

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)- Grocery store workers in Arcata might be getting a boost in hourly wages if the city council moves forward with the hazard pay ordinance related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5 submitted a proposal that will be discussed at the next city council meeting in Arcata.

The proposal suggests a four dollar per hour pay bump at stores that employ 500 or more people or a three dollar per hour raise for stores that employ less than 500 people.

“They have continued to show up and serve the public and the employers have had those record profits but instead of sharing that win fall of profits with those who are at most risk they have chosen not to,” said John Frahm, North Coast Director for the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5. “It’s been over 240 days since the people last received any type of appreciation pay.”

The UFCW says it expects similar ordinances to be discussed by the Eureka City Council and the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors later this month.
