Check scam alert, police warn businesses to be vigilant

FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)- The Fortuna Police Department has issued a scam alert involving bounced checks totaling thousands of dollars.

According to FPD he checks were written this month on two separate dates.

The first check, which totaled more than $3,000 was written on March 19th, by a female suspect now identified as Stormie Dawn Moore.

A week later another business was victimized, according to FDP, Moore wrote another check from an account with insufficient funds on March 26th.

Police want to alert local businesses to these incidents to prevent the crime from happening again.

Officer Lindsey Frank with the Fortuna Police Department says the amount of the bogus checks was a concern.  

“There were three checks for two separate businesses that were written over the amount of $4000 dollars,” she said. “So, the Fortuna Police department wanted to notify the publics so we can protect the citizens and businesses. And we live in a such a small community, if you don’t know the person you have a right to refuse that type of payment.” “
