ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)- A local restaurant in Arcata is back in business with the help of the community.

So, the restaurant needed a way to say thanks and what better way than with free food.

Esteban’s Mexican Restaurant in Arcata has been through a lot, with having to deal with the obstacles thrown at it because of the ongoing pandemic and tragically losing Esteban Gonzalez, the owner of the restaurant.

The restaurant closed briefly after the passing of Gonzalez and when the news made it to the public, the community stepped up to help out.

So, Francisca Bazan Gonzales, the wife of Esteban and new owner of the restaurant, decided to thank the community for the support by giving free tacos.

“I am grateful to the entire community that donated,” Francisca said. “We were going to do it when he just passed away but since the pandemic was pretty bad, and maybe right now to but that’s why we are doing this.”

Esteban’s family was shocked by the enormous community support and had no idea how much he was loved throughout Humboldt County.

“Many people have come to eat at the restaurant and it is beautiful how the community wanted it,” said the nephew of Esteban, Luis Cilveron.

Family and friends of Esteban hope that they can continue to do events like these to celebrate the live of such a beloved person.

“We hope that every year the community continues to support Francisco Gonzalez,” said Flor Cuenca, a family friend. “We hope that, if God allows us and gives us life we can remember his memory every year.”
