Local Weott teen makes U.S. history as first female platoon trained in Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego

FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)-A Local Weott teen made history Thursday after being part of the first female platoon to be Trained at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

South Fork High School Graduate Miranda Femenella excelled during bootcamp, she was one of few Marines to get a perfect score on her fitness test, and now can say she’s made history.

According to Staff Sergeant David Luna, woman have only trained in MCRD Parris Island In South Carolina, the historic event was fueled by The National Defense Authorization Act signed last year, which requires Marine’s transition to a fully integrated boot camp in San Diego by 2028.

The three-month training is considered one the toughest branches of the United States Military, according to Luna, and says Miranda earned the title of “Marine”.

“With Miranda having the courage to be able to trust and develop herself in the strong hearted lioness of an individual that she is. She will never have an obstacle that she will not be able to conquer. Miranda is in Marine Combat Training in at Camp Pendleton, then begin Military Occupational Specialty Training in Aviation.
