UK variant, pockets of unvaccinated people could be to blame for recent uptick in Covid-19 cases

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — The recent uptick in Covid-19 cases locally is the result of pockets of unvaccinated people being exposed to and getting sick with the UK variant, according to Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman. This is pushing the county’s case rate and positivity rate higher than other parts of the state.

Based on the numbers, this pattern is likely to continue for the next several months unless vaccination rates change dramatically. With this in mind, the County is working to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of June 15th. That’s when the state’s Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted.

There is still some uncertainty as far as updated mask guidance. The County is working with the state to find out what exactly that will look like. In the meantime, masking will help protect those who haven’t had a chance to get a shot.

“Continuing universal masking in California for the next month will allow us to continue to protect those vulnerable who are having a hard time getting vaccinated, allow those who are unsure about the vaccine to get enough information to decide if they want to vaccinate before the masks are gone, and to get the newest eligibility group of 12 to 15 year olds enough time to get their vaccine,” Dr. Hoffman adds.
