EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- The fourth annual Battle of the Badges started this morning at the Northern California Community Blood Bank in Eureka. The idea is to donate much needed blood on behalf of your local fire department or police department.

According to the organization CEO, now is the time to draw more attention to the need for blood donors.

“Summertime is always a difficult time to collect blood in Humboldt County. Students are on summer break and people go away for vacation. So this is when we really need our blood drive sponsors to help us out,” Kate Witthaus, CEO of Blood Bank.

Their goal every year is to bring in more first time donors.

Throughout the week, they will also go mobile with stations in Arcata, Fortuna and McKinleyville to make the whole process of donating as easy as possible.

“It is the easiest thing I can do to help pout my fellow humans. It’s such an easy way to give a gift that is, you know, irreplaceable,” Nancy Renzo, Eureka resident.
