HOOPA, Calif. (KIEM)- The Hoopa Volunteer Fire Department was called out past midnight about a structure fire in Hoopa. Living in the home were two current residents who escaped the fire with nothing but what they were wearing at the time.

“My granddaughter flew in through my door and said, ‘grandma, the house is on fire.’ By the time I got in the kitchen, the back door was in flames, and I just headed out the door,” Marilyn Martin, Hoopa burned home Resident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the Volunteer Fire Department, the night of the fire, unfortunately, ran out of water.

Yesterday the fire started again, causing a threat to its surroundings.

“Some fire still burning in remains of the structure, it escaped into the wildland yesterday, and it burnt a field and threatened some homes and vehicles,” Gregory Moon, Fire Chief at Hoopa Fire Department.

Marilyn Martin is extremely thankful she and her granddaughter made it out safely and grateful for the amount of support she has received from the community.

If you would like to help out, Marilyn currently has a gofund me page that you can find on our website.
