EUREKA, Calif.(KIEM)- The National Fire Protection Association has been the official sponsor of fire prevention week for 99 years. They have announced “Learn the sounds of fire safety” as the theme for fire prevention week.

Humboldt Bay Fire has planned a whole week of activities for the community; the activities start today and will run through Friday. The theme “Learn the sound of fire” is set to help people better understand the reasons smoke alarms may sound and to know how to address them effectively. They also want to ensure that smoke alarms remain in working order.

“We really wanted to make this year special and find ways to engage with people every day with fire prevention. We are really excited for what we got set up for this year,” said Amy Segui, Community Risk Reduction Specialist at Humboldt Bay Fire.

Tomorrow they will host a webinar, and a participant will be chosen at random to win a prize. You can also fill out a form by Thursday if you are in need of a smoke detector or need assistance installing it.

Humboldt Bay Fire started the week by handing out activity packets to parents and teachers. They also had sparky the fire dog take pictures with kids.

“We are encouraging people to use our fire safely habits checklist and be participating in fire safety and fire prevention activities throughout the week,” said Amy Segui.

Humboldt Bay Fire wants to encourage those participating in fire safety activities to take pictures of themselves, post to social media, and tag Humboldt Bay Fire. Each time you do, you will be entered into a huge giveaway. The winner will be receiving a fire safety kit that includes a generator.

If you would like to learn more about the activities this week or need assistance with them, call 707-441-4000 or email Info@HBFire.org.
