Chief Steve Watson Announces his Retirement

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- This morning, Chief of Police Steve Watson announced he is retiring from the Eureka Police Department. His last day as chief will be at the end of November.

Chief Steve Watson has served the Eureka community for over 16 years. He joined the EPD in 2005 and was appointed Chief of Police in 2017. 

In over four years as Chief of Police, Watson focused on strengthening the relationship between the police department and the community. He also understood the importance of the wellness of EPD employees. He worked hard on improving training, equipment and technology as well as officer safety.

In his statement, Chief Watson said “Policing is a shared community responsibility that is all about relationships at its heart. I want to take a moment to thank the many people who have shown the Eureka Police Department, my family, and me so much support and encouragement over the years.”

City Manager Miles Slattery announced they will start the recruitment process to find a new a Chief of Police soon.
