EUREKA, Calif.(KIEM)- The First Annual Veterans Day at McKay was held this morning. The event was held to honor veterans by participating in a 5k and 10k run. The Organizers plan on making this a yearly event.

“The goal was to show community support for our veterans, build community, be outside doing something in nature and highlight the McKay track and the natural beauty we have up here in Humboldt and I think it was a huge success, and I would just like to say thank to everybody that put effort into it,” said Mike Price Event Organizer and Air Force Reserve Member.

After the run, participants and community organizations met up at Humboldt Cider Garden, where they handed out awards to the racers and got a chance to learn about different organizations.

“A lot of these organizations are veteran-focused, but the goal was to bring community organization out to both veterans and community members,” said Irina Estes, Organizer with  Humboldt IPA.

The event was organized by local veterans who realized there were no local runs dedicated to veterans in Eureka and wanted to honor fellow veterans.

“For me in particular, this is my favorite day of the year because we have the opportunity to recognize and support our veterans and active-duty military across the world,” said Eugene Womack, Vietnam War Veteran with Mad River Community Honor Guard.
