Superintendent Michael Davies-Hughes kicked off reelection campaign with a rally

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-Current superintendent Michael Davies-Hughes announced that he would be seeking reelection as superintendent for the Humboldt County Office of Education.

He was appointed by the board back in November after the previous superintendent, Chris Hartley, resigned, taking on a different role in education.

After just a few months of taking on the superintendent role, it was vital for him to seek reelection.

“I want to make sure that other students in this county have the opportunities I have been given because I think education can be a great equalizer if used appropriately,” said Michael Davies-Hughes, Superintendent for the Humboldt County Office of Education.

Community members gathered at Madaket Plaza to support the kick-off of the campaign.

“He gets it, and I think he can step up and do the right thing. Especially in these trying times, as we are going through with covid, pandemic, and distance learning,” said Rex Bohn, 1st District Supervisor for Humboldt County.

Davies-Hughes acknowledges that staffing schools can currently be a challenge due to the pandemic affecting students and staff.

“We have been working hard in the Humboldt County Office of Education to try and mobilize more support for the training of substitute teachers and also looking outside the boundaries of Humboldt County to try and recruit people into the county to be able to support our schools in working classrooms with the goal of keeping schools open for in-person instruction,” said Michael Davies-Hughes.

As of Friday, he is the only one running for the superintendent position.
