Long lines at food Distribution at the BayShore mall by Food for People

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)- For some in our community struggling economically the need for food has never been greater. That was evidenced today by the long lines for Food For People’s latest free produce distribution.

Hundreds lining up in their cars at Eureka’s Bayshore mall for the free outdoor distribution.

It provided nutritious seasonal produce along with healthy pantry staples. Food for People organizers say these distributions really make an impact as the economic need grows in the county.

“We’re seeing spikes in the number of people coming. We’re seeing a lot newer faces than you know we’re used to. That’s true not just here in the location in Eureka, but a lot of our food pantries are seeing an increased need…What we’re hearing is, you know, it’s a lot of the same things. We’re all dealing with increased food costs and gas costs. It’s making it hard to stretch the monthly budget right now. So, we’re seeing a few more people coming to the foodbank looking for some assistance,” said Food for People Development Director.
