A sinkhole shuts down a street in Brookings, Tuesday. The city says Ransom Avenue is closed to cars and pedestrians between Sixth and Fern after the sink hole collapsed around a storm drain. The city says the area is unsafe; portions of sidewalk, landscaping trees and smaller storm drain piping have also collapsed, and a wall next to the Brookhaven community is also in danger of collapsing. The city says they are deactivating a section of water main that is now suspended across the sink hole; some water customers in that area will be affected. The city engineer is currently evaluating the site, and work will begin later today to clear debris.
