Sheriff Honsal says it is best to get children back in the classroom

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – Along with public health officials, Sheriff William Honsal believes it is best to get children back into the classroom, but in the safest way possible.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent pandemic watch list does not include Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

However, Honsal says the governor’s orders have to be backed up by the local public officials.

Although he does not anticipate any local school districts will defy the recent school pandemic plan, Honsal does remind us that being in violation of a public official’s order does carry a misdemeanor.

With most Northern California schools being able to conduct restricted face-to-face classes, Honsal says learning has to continue but he understands that each school district is trying to make the best decision for its students.

“We understand that there are challenges with that,” Honsal said. “School districts that can distance their students and do all of those things that are necessary can make that happen. We want to support them as much as possible and support our children in this.”
