Slater and Devil Fires have burned more than 162,000 acres

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — The Slater and Devil Fires have grown to more than 162,000 acres as they continue to burn across Del Norte and Siskiyou Counties.

The Slater Fire is roughly 154,100 acres in size and is 42% contained. The Devil Fire is about 8,400 acres with 18% containment. Close to 1,200 personnel are fighting the 2 fires. Recent rains and natural barriers have slowed the fire allowing crews dig control lines.

“We’re going to still have hot and dry weather, but the winds have diminished significantly. That’s the most important thing. The wind is what gets these fires up and makes them rock. So, it’s looking really good. I like to say I’m cautiously optimistic,” Operations Section Chief Mike Granger says.
