Eureka Council relaxes design standards to pave the way for additional housing

EUREKA – Eureka City Council has approved changes to residential design standards to make it easier to add new units.
Council accepted staff recommendations to alter the standards ahead of a complete overhaul of the city’s zoning codes.
Maximum building height, rear yard development and minimum driveway standards were relaxed.
In addition, now driveways count as parking spaces and won’t have to be covered. Tandem parking is also allowed.
Staff believe these changes will lead to additional housing in the city.
Eureka Development Services Director Rob Holmlund said, “Those six things collectively should make it a lot easier for people to make improvements to their homes or to build mother in law units and it should have a pretty significant impact.”
