Dredge is Finally here Cleaning the Humboldt Bay Harbor Entrance

HUMBOLDT BAY, CA (KIEM) – Mariners are getting much-needed assistance, with the dredge finally in town cleaning the Humboldt Bay Harbor entrance.

Back in February, the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District Declared a State of Emergency, because the entrance was only 13 feet deep instead of 48.

Now, a smaller dredge is working to get the entrance down to 26 feet. When the work is done, a larger dredge will do the rest and get the entrance mud level down to 44 feet.

“In the meantime, we’re working with the shipping industry. Which has had a hard time, because no ships have been able to go out of the Bay. So we’re really working to get the Bay open as fast as we can so that they can start getting ships out,” said Larry Oetker, Executive Director of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District Executive Director.

The larger dredge is expected to be at the Harbor Entrance the first week of June.
