Ferndale, Ca. (KIEM) — These dogs may be cute, but they mean business. The Humboldt County Fairgrounds was packed full of dogs and owners ready to compete at this year’s Lost Coast Kennel Club’s show. Nearly 500 dogs participated and over 100 different breeds.

“All of the breeds in the American Kennel Club registration belong to one of seven groups. Herding, sporting, hound, terriers, toys, etcetera,” Lost Coast Kennel Club Vice President, Cathlyn Wright, said.

There are various competitions to compete in, but no matter what, it takes a lot of preparation.

According to dog owner, Connie Bartlett, “It’s a lot of work and a lot of passion. Lots of practice. We start practicing with them right from babies, so Chelsea has been going since she was a little kid.”

Of all the contestants, the judges are looking for the dog that is closest to the breed standard to take home the prize.

“Proper heads, bones, ear and eye shape, texture of coats, temperament. All of those things go into the soundness of a dog,” Bartlett said.

Judging and winning aside, the Kennel Club calls its event ‘the friendly show.’ They really hope that whether you are a competitor or a spectator, you enjoy your time at the dog show.

“A lot of people always say you guys have the best show because it’s fun and more relaxing. We want our show to be friendly, welcoming, and lower stress,” Wright said.

The Lost Coast Kennel Club will be holding another dog show and competition in Ferndale on July 19th.
