Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — first announced in an email to City Council and staff, Eureka City Manager Greg Sparks is retiring. He says he is not taking another job elsewhere. Redwood News sat down with him to talk about what this decision means for him and the city.

For Sparks, city management has been his job for the last 40 years, and this year, he’s stepping down. He’s been in Eureka for the last five years and has done quite a lot in that time.

One of the projects he remembers most is clearing out some of the larger homeless encampments around the city. He acknowledges that the city still has some work to do when it comes to homelessness, but points out all of the other great things his team has done.

For Sparks, what comes next is still a little uncertain. He hopes to pursue hobbies such as backpacking and mountain climbing in retirement. Looking back on his time as city manager, he reflects on what he will miss the most, the people he has had the opportunity to work with.

The City Council held a special closed session meeting last night to discuss what comes next. The goal is to have the position filled by the end of the year, but Sparks is flexible and willing to stick around until a replacement is found.
