Kidnapping Phone Call Scam

CRESCENT CITY, Ca. (KIEM)- Scam phone calls pretending to be kidnappers plague Del Norte County.

The Del Norte County Sheriff dispatch center says that a new scam phone calls has residents frightened.

The scammers pretend to have a daughter or granddaughter screaming on the phone. Then a male voice comes on demanding payment in exchange for the girl’s life. The scammers can be from an international number, or with enough information, they can mirror the phone number of a loved one.

Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office says that the best way to avoid these scams is to ignore calls from unknown numbers.

If you receive one of these calls, file a report with the FBI and report it to the Del Norte County Sheriff dispatch center.
