Man with machete taken into custody by Eureka Police

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — Eureka Police take a man into custody after barricading himself underneath a building.

Around 11:45 Thursday morning, EPD responded to the 1600 block of Waterfront Drive for a report of a man vandalizing a wall with spray paint.

The first officer on scene witnessed the same man swinging a machete. As the officer approached, the man fled on foot east on the waterfront trail. The man was eventually found hiding under the Blue Ox Millworks building where he barricaded himself into a corner near the foundation.

While negotiating with the man, officers located a backpack containing a machete and axe. The man eventually surrendered, was detained, and transported to county mental health for evaluation. Charges will be forwarded to the DA’s office for review.
